Western Samoa

Independent country from 1962 and a full member of the *Commonwealth since 1970. It comprises the greater part of Samoa, a group of islands in the south Pacific (the rest being American Samoa). During the 19C Britain, Germany and the USA competed for influence until a treaty of 1899 made Western Samoa a German colony. After World War I control passed to New Zealand under a League of Nations *mandate. Since independence Malietoa Tanumafili II has been head of state, in the role of a constitutional monarch.
