Charles Wesley
|
|
(1707–88) One of the founders of the *Methodist movement, with his elder brother John. Charles's greatest contribution was in the writing of hymns, which played an important part in the spiritual fervour of Methodist worship. Of some 7500 published under the joint names of the two brothers, nearly all were by Charles. They include such perennial favourites as Jesu, lover of my soul and Love divine, all loves excelling; and one that became a popular carol, Hark! the herald angels sing.
