By far the most successful survivor among the ancient *Celtic languages. There has been no period at which it was not a living language, and today it remains the first language of more than half a million people in *Wales (nearly 20% of the total), for whom programmes are broadcast on radio and television. There is a full and rich Welsh literature, ranging from the medieval tales of the *Mabinogion to the fiction of Daniel *Owen. The Welsh bardic tradition is enthusiastically kept alive by means of the *eisteddfod.
