War Graves Commission

|
(Commonwealth War Graves Commission) Established in 1917 as the Imperial War Graves Commission, the organization commemorates the 1,700,000 members of the forces of the UK, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and other countries then in the Commonwealth, who died in the two World Wars. It maintains nearly a million graves throughout the world, together with monuments for those who were lost but never identified. The movingly simple epitaph on World War I graves of unidentified bodies (A Soldier of the Great War Known unto God) was chosen by *Kipling as literary adviser to the Commission.
