(1700) Comedy by *Congreve about the elaborate ruses required if Mirabell is to win the heart and hand of his beloved Millamant without losing her inheritance. Her own independent spirit is one of his obstacles, and a high point of the play is her listing of the 'provisos' (mainly the avoidance of fashionable behaviour) on which she might accept him: 'These articles subscrib'd, if I continue to endure you a little longer, I may by degrees dwindle into a wife.'
