(6km/4m SW of Ripon) Landscape garden of the 18C with *Fountains Abbey as a climax to its vista of curving lakes and classical follies. The garden, with its architectural features such as the Octagon Tower and the Temples of Fame and Piety, was created between 1720 and 1781 by a father and son, John and William Aislabie. The house itself was severely damaged by fire in 1946 and was subsequently demolished.
