Wakehurst Place
|
|
(32km/20m N of Brighton) Garden created mainly between 1902 and 1936 by Gerald Loder and administered since 1965 as a companion to *Kew Gardens. Wakehurst now specializes in those plants and trees which prefer its rich moist earth to the dry soil of Kew (among them, superb rhododendrons). The many different areas of the extensive gardens (some 200ha/500ac) are planted according to species, with the result that the natural beauties of the place have an added appeal for the specialist.
