Alfred Wainwright

|
(1907–91) Author of walking guides to the fells of northern England which have acquired a high status with hikers (a million and a half copies sold since he published his first in 1952). The most popular is his Coast to Coast Walk; St Bees Head to Robin Hood's Bay, but this became the subject of controversy in the early 1990s when conservationists argued that the large number of ramblers following the route were damaging environmentally sensitive areas.
