(1860–1939) Artist who painted a profusion of cats in an invariably cheerful manner; they are presented as feline humans, standing on their hind legs, usually in comic situations. Immensely successful from the 1890s, and illustrator of numerous books, he was certified insane in 1923 and spent his last years in an asylum.
