Waddesdon Manor
|
|
(42km/26m NE of Oxford) Renaissance-style château, built 1874–89 for Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild by a French architect (Gabriel-Hippolyte Destailleur) to house a rich profusion of paintings and objects, which still cram to bursting this museum of a house. French art of the 18C is the central theme, but there is much else. The baron left his exceptional medieval and Renaissance collection to the *British Museum, where it is exhibited as the Waddesdon Bequest.
