Virgin Islands
|
|
Group in the northeast Caribbean, visited by *Columbus in 1493 and named in honour of St Ursula, supposedly martyred with 11,000 other virgins. The eastern islands form the colony of the British Virgin Islands. The largest of these, Tortola, was captured from the Dutch in 1666. The western islands were a Danish colony until 1917, when they were bought by the USA.
