Victoria Memorial

(London SW1) A large sculptural group at the southwest end of the *Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace. It was designed by Thomas Brock (1847–1922) and was unveiled in 1911. Unfashionable in the past, this baroque profusion of white figures (using some 2300 tons of marble) is nevertheless a striking piece of public sculpture. Beneath a gilded figure of Victory, Victoria herself sits massively, staring down the Mall, accompanied by a suitable collection of allegorical handmaidens.
