Victoria Cross

(VC) Britain's highest decoration, awarded for heroism in war. Instituted by Queen *Victoria in 1856, the crosses are cast from guns captured in the *Crimea. It is awarded only to the armed forces and nursing services (or to civilians under orders from those services). Suspended from a crimson ribbon, the medal consists of a bronze cross with at its centre the royal crown, surmounted by a lion, and the words 'For Valour'.
