Usher Hall
|
|
Edinburgh's main concert hall, built with £100,000 donated for the purpose in 1896 by Andrew Usher (1826–98). The hall was formally opened by his widow on 6 March 1914, followed by an organ recital and a performance of Beethoven's 5th symphony. Seating nearly 3000 people, the hall has been used until recently only for classical music; but it now opens its doors to a wider range of entertainment, including pop concerts, causing local indignation in some circles.
