Uppark
|
|
(18km/11m NW of Chichester) Four-square redbrick house, built in the early 1690s and famous for its delicate rococo interiors of the mid-18C, many of them decorated until recently with the original fabrics and papers. In 1989 the upper floors were gutted by fire (with the loss of many privately owned works of art), but nearly all the contents were removed from the ground-floor public rooms; these are being restored down to the smallest detail. Uppark was the first step in the lively extramarital career of Emma *Hamilton; and the mother of H.G. *Wells was housekeeper here during his boyhood.
