University College, London

The first university college established in England outside Oxford and Cambridge. It was set up in 1826 for *Nonconformists because only Anglicans were admitted to the two old universities (*King's College in London was the immediate Anglican response). The main building in Gower Street (1827–9) is by *Wilkins, and has Jeremy *Bentham as its oldest resident. The college was in existence before *London University, of which it is now a part. University College Hospital is a teaching hospital, attached to the college from the 1830s.
