Twinkle, twinkle, little star
|
|
Nursery rhyme published in 1806 and unusual in having been written specifically as a poem for children (by Jane Taylor, 1783–1824) rather than emerging from obscure popular antecedents. The cliché of the star compared to a diamond in the sky provoked the Mad Hatter's famous parody in *Alice in Wonderland ('Twinkle, twinkle, little bat'), where the bat is likened to a tea-tray in the sky.
