Twickenham

(18km/11m W of central London)
District on the north bank of the river Thames, part of the Greater London borough of Richmond-upon-Thames. It became a fashionable area in the 18C after Alexander *Pope moved there; later in the century Horace Walpole built *Strawberry Hill nearby. Today it is more widely known for Twickenham stadium, England's national ground and the international centre for *rugby union football (headquarters of the Rugby Football Union). The ground opened in 1909 with terraces and two covered stands.
