Royal Tunbridge ware
|
|
Wooden objects, usually small, decorated with patterns of coloured mosaic. The method was developed in the late 17C in *Tunbridge Wells and in nearby Tonbridge, and was still in use in the early 20C. Sticks of wood of different colours, several inches long, were glued together so that their ends formed a pattern or image in mosaic. The completed bundle was then sliced into thin layers of veneer for application to boxes, trays, picture frames, or even occasionally cabinets and tables.
