Tudor
|
|
A term which can be applied to any period of the Tudor dynasty (1485–1603) but is most often used by architectural historians for the years before 1558, the later part being known as *Elizabethan. The distinction, seen in secular buildings, is that Tudor detail is still essentially *Gothic – for example the stone windows set in the redbrick walls of Wolsey's *Hampton Court – whereas in the showy buildings of Elizabeth's reign (dubbed in recent years 'prodigy houses') the themes of the *Renaissance begin to arrive from continental Europe.
