troy weight
|
|
Medieval system of weights, deriving from Troyes in France. It was replaced by the *imperial system in 1878 except in the field of jewels and precious metals, where it is still used. The smallest unit is a grain; there are 24 grains in a pennyweight, 20 pennyweights in a troy ounce, and 12 ounces in a troy pound.
