Tristan da Cunha
|
|
Volcanic island in the south Atlantic, named after the Portuguese sailor who discovered it in 1506. Britain established a small garrison in 1816 which was withdrawn in 1817, but Corporal William Glass was given permission to remain with his wife and two children. Others later joined them and their descendants formed a settled community. An eruption in 1961 of the island's volcano, thought to be extinct, caused the islanders to be evacuated to Britain. Most of them returned in 1963. Since 1938 Tristan da Cunha has been administered as a dependency of *St Helena.
