triple crown

Term current from the 19C for victory in all three *classic English races open to colts – the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger. It is now used also for contests between the four countries of the British Isles (England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales), being achieved when any one of them beats the other three. Best known in relation to rugby union, a triple crown of this kind is competed for also in hockey and various other team sports.
