Corporation responsible for lighthouses, light vessels, buoys and beacons around the coasts of England and Wales. Its origins are obscure (it may have been a guild of mariners similar to the *City Livery Companies), but successive royal charters of the 16C gave the Guild of Trinity (known by the middle of that century as Trinity House) the right to place 'seamarks'. The present Trinity House, on Tower Hill, was built for the corporation in 1792–4; almost entirely demolished in the blitz, it has been rebuilt behind the original façade.
The equivalent responsibility for the coastal waters of Scotland rests with the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses, based in Edinburgh.
