Member of the *Commonwealth since 1962, consisting of the two most southerly of the *Caribbean islands, just off the coast of Venezuela. Both were visited by *Columbus in 1498. Trinidad was a Spanish colony from 1532 until ceded to Britain in 1802. Tobago was first settled by the Dutch in 1632 and was successively occupied by different European nations; it was eventually ceded to Britain by France in 1814, and was amalgamated administratively with Trinidad in 1888. Trinidad, like *Jamaica, seceded from the *West Indies Federation in 1962, opting for immediate independence.
