Trent
|
|
The main river of the Midlands, flowing 274km/170m from north Staffordshire in a great loop (southeast through the Potteries and *Stoke-on-Trent, then northeast again through Burton-upon-Trent and *Nottingham) to enter the North Sea by the *Humber estuary. The river acquired great importance in the late 18C after the Grand Trunk Canal had joined the Mersey to the Trent, downstream of Burton, to provide in 1772 the first coast-to-coast route across England for barges.
