Treasure Island
|
|
(1883) Adventure story of 18C piracy, by Robert Louis *Stevenson. The boy hero, Jim Hawkins, finds a map of an island with buried treasure. He shows it to Squire Trelawney, who sails with Jim on the schooner Hispaniola to recover the booty. Among the crew are several pirates, led by the one-legged ship's cook, Long John Silver, whose plot to seize the ship is discovered by Jim. The pirates are overcome in a battle, and the treasure is found with the help of a castaway, Ben Gunn, whose years on the island have been enlivened by dreams of cheese, 'toasted, mostly'.
