(Edinburgh) Theatre with a distinguished record in new drama; more than 400 new plays have been presented since it was founded in 1963 by Jim Haynes, with the intention of achieving throughout the year the vitality of the Fringe at the *Edinburgh Festival. The theatre was in those days a club (and remained so until 1988), functioning in tiny premises in the Lawnmarket. In 1969 it moved to a converted warehouse in the Grassmarket, and then in 1992 to a custom-built home with two auditoria (250 and 100 seats) next door to the Usher Hall.
