Travellers' Club

(London SW1) A *club founded in 1819 for gentlemen who had travelled abroad – an adventure only recently possible again, with the ending of the *Napoleonic Wars. In 1828 the club acquired its premises in Pall Mall, part of the site of *Carlton House; a competition to find the architect was won by Charles *Barry, who completed the Italian-Renaissance building in 1832.
