Transjordan

|
That part of the *mandated territory of *Palestine which lay east of the river Jordan. It was administered by Britain as a separate area, because the mandate specifically excluded it from the terms of the *Balfour Declaration. Abdullah (1882–1951), the brother of Faisal I of *Iraq, was appointed emir of Transjordan in 1921, becoming king on independence in 1946. The country's name was changed to Jordan in 1949 – reflecting the extension of the kingdom to the west bank of the Jordan, where territory was captured and annexed in the war of 1948–9 against Israel.
