Tower Bridge
|
|
(London EC3) One of London's best-known landmarks and for most of the twentieth century the furthest bridge downstream over the *Thames; it was built in 1886–94 a few hundred yards below *London Bridge. The engineer was John Wolfe-Barry (1836–1918), a son of the architect Charles Barry; and the Gothic exterior was designed by Horace Jones (1819–87). The tall towers conceal the machinery which raises the roadway, as two drawbridges, to let ships pass through. The towers also contain lifts to take pedestrians up to the high-level footbridge.
