, known as Spurs (White Hart Lane, London N17). Football club formed in 1882 by members of a cricket club, most of them old boys from two local schools. It was not until 1895 that it turned professional. In 1901 it became the only non-League club (since the formation of the *Football League in 1888) to win the FA Cup, and in 1908 it finally entered the League – in Division 2, winning promotion at the end of the first season. Achievements were relatively modest until the 1960s, but in 1961 Spurs became the first team in the 20C to win the FA Cup and the League in the same year.
