tossing the caber

The most specifically Scottish of the athletic events at *Highland games. The caber (Gaelic for a pole) is the size of a telegraph pole; the one used at the *Braemar gathering is 5.8m/19ft long and weighs 54kg/119lb. The contestant must support it upright on his joined hands, and then toss it so that it lands on its other end and falls away from him. The winning throw is the caber which falls most nearly in a straight line (i.e. nearest to 12 o'clock from the contestant).
