Resort in Devon, popular since the early 19C because of its beautiful sea views and the mild climate caused by the *Gulf Stream. There are ruins of Torre Abbey, founded in the 12C, and a house in the abbey grounds is now used as the art gallery. The town's museum has the finds from nearby *Kent's Cavern, one of the oldest inhabited sites in Britain. In 1968 Torquay was merged with two neighbouring towns to form the borough of Torbay (123,000 in 1991).
