Tom Jones
|
|
(in full The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling 1749) Novel by Henry *Fielding with an immensely complex plot which includes: the boyhood of Tom in the household of Squire Allworthy (who has adopted him after returning home to find a baby abandoned on his bed); Tom's education at the hands of two malevolent tutors, Messrs Square and Thwackum; his developing love for Sophia, the daughter of the neighbouring Squire Western; the misfortunes which cause him to be driven unjustly from home; and his many sexual adventures before a final happy reunion with Sophia, leading to marriage and the blessing of both paternal squires. A film (Tom Jones 1963) was directed in suitably rumbustious style by Tony Richardson, with a script by John Osborne and with Albert Finney as Tom and Susannah York as Sophia.
