Tom Brown's Schooldays
|
|
(1857) Novel by Thomas Hughes (1822–96), which from its first publication rapidly became Britain's best-known schoolboy story. It takes place at *Rugby (Hughes's own school) and it idolizes the famous headmaster, Dr *Arnold. Under his influence Tom progresses from a mildly naughty small boy to a courageous and committed Christian, but the book's appeal derives from its realistic and often brutal portrayal of life in a boys' boarding school – most notably in Tom's persecution by the school bully, *Flashman.
