Toby jug
|
|
Pottery jug in the form of a seated figure, himself holding a jug to tipple from and usually wearing a three-cornered hat which doubles as lid and drinking cup. First made in the mid-18C at the Staffordshire factory of Ralph Wood (1715–72), many versions were later produced both in Britain and abroad – all of them male except the one featuring Martha Gunn, a famous 'dipper' at *Brighton. The original jug is said to have been based on Toby Philpot, a real-life toper featured in a song of 1761 called The Brown Jug.
