|
(1836–1902) French realist painter who lived in London from 1871 to 1882 and produced a large number of detailed pictures of English social life, much of it taking place on and around the Thames. The woman who appears in so many of them was his Irish mistress, Kathleen Newton. It was after her death from tuberculosis in 1882 that he returned to Paris.
