Tippoo's Tiger
|
|
(Victoria and Albert Museum) Life-size mechanical toy of a tiger devouring a prostrate European in the costume of the 1790s. It was made for *Tipu, the Sultan of Mysore, who fought two wars against the *East India Company, and it was brought to London after the Company defeated him in 1799. Only the man's arm moves (up and down in agony) but a concealed organ reproduces the roars of the tiger and the cries of the victim.
