The Time Machine

(1895) The title story of the first book of short stories by H.G. *Wells, developed from a series of articles which he wrote in a science journal for schools. The Time Traveller has invented a vehicle which can transport him to any period. His first stop is the year 802701, where he finds the leisurely and effete Eloi threatened by the Morlocks, descended from generations of underground labourers (a disastrous class division which is the theme of much of Wells's work). He later inspects the forms of life which have survived the extinction of man, and visits earth in its final era – a time of lurking monsters and terrifying eclipses of the sun.
