three Rs
|
|
Term in use since the early 19C for the three elements of a basic education (reading, writing and arithmetic), which can be spoken to sound as if they all begin with the letter R. Although the phrase is essentially a joke at the expense of education, it is now used even in the most solemn of contexts.
