Three Choirs Festival
|
|
Europe's oldest surviving annual music festival. The cathedral choirs of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester first came together to perform in about 1717; the purpose was to raise funds for 'widows and orphans of the Clergy of the three Dioceses'. The cities have taken it in turn since then (except during war years) to stage the event. The three choirs, augmented by other local singers, remain at the heart of the enterprise and most of the music is heard in the cathedrals (including orchestral works), but there are many related performances in other nearby locations.
