Thomas, the Tank Engine
|
|
The best known of the characters in the 'Railway Series' by the Rev. W. Awdry (Wilbert Awdry, 1911–97). The steam engines converse through their funnels (an idea which had occurred to Awdry in bed as a child, listening to the engines whistling and puffing on the railway), and Thomas is much bossed around by superior locomotives. The series ran to 26 volumes, from The Three Railway Engines (1945) to Tramway Engines (1972).
