Thirty-nine Articles
|
|
Historically the central statement of belief of the *Church of England. Based on the Forty-two Articles drawn up by *Cranmer in 1553, they were given their final form in 1563 (with minor revisions in 1571), becoming the doctrine to which Anglican clergy had to assent. They took account of the broad spectrum of religious views in Elizabethan England, attempting to accommodate Catholics who might give up Rome (and five of the seven sacraments) as well as Puritans who could tolerate bishops. They have traditionally been printed at the end of The *Book of Common Prayer.
