John Tenniel
|
|
(1820–1914, kt 1893) Cartoonist and illustrator who spent most of his career with *Punch. He joined in 1850 and provided the main political cartoon each week from 1862 to 1901. Out of more than 2000, his best known has long been *'Dropping the Pilot'. In spite of this huge output, his name would be relatively unfamiliar now if he had not also illustrated Lewis *Carroll's two books about Alice. It is thanks to Tenniel that we have such memorable images of Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Mad Hatter, the Jabberwock and many more, including Alice herself.
