Temple Bar
|
|
Originally a simple barrier across Fleet Street marking the western limit of the *City of London. By the 14C it had become a gateway with a prison above it. Rebuilt in the 1670s to a design by *Wren, it remained in position until 1878 when it was removed as an obstacle to traffic. A few years later it was rebuilt at Theobalds in Hertfordshire (near Waltham Cross), where it remains today. In 1880 the Temple Bar Memorial was erected near the Law Courts, to mark where the Temple Bar had been, and this now represents the transition, on the old east-west thoroughfare, between the cities of London and Westminster.
