River rising in the northern Pennines and flowing about 113km/70m southeast and east to enter the North Sea at Middlesbrough. Historically it has been the border between Yorkshire and Durham, but in 1974 the heavily industrialized area round the estuary became the separate county of Cleveland. The river is navigable as far upstream as Stockton, a major port in the early 19C and the terminus of the *Stockton and Darlington railway.
