(56,000 in 1991) Town on the river Tone; administrative centre of Somerset. There was an Anglo-Saxon castle here from the 8C. The present castle (12C, but much demolished and restored) houses the Somerset County Museum, which includes a Roman mosaic floor found in Low Ham, a village a few miles to the northeast. The church of St Mary Magdalene, mainly of the 15–16C, has a tall elaborately carved tower and a magnificent oak Tudor roof in the nave. The town was one of the main locations of the Bloody Assizes held in 1685 by Judge *Jeffreys.
