Tamburlaine the Great
|
|
(c.1587) Drama by *Marlowe, published in 1590 but probably first performed in 1587. The play chronicles the rise of the 14C conqueror Tamburlaine, or Timur, from shepherd and bandit to emperor of vast dominions. In its rich use of *blank verse and in providing a towering role for an actor (in this case Edward *Alleyn), Tamburlaine set the pattern for the glories of Elizabethan and Jacobean tragedy.
