River which rises close to the Bristol Channel and flows south to the English Channel, forming for most of its length (97km/60m) the border between Cornwall and Devon. Two notable bridges cross its estuary, a suspension bridge carrying the A38 (opened 1961) and a railway bridge – the Royal Albert Bridge, by Isambard Kingdom *Brunel, completed in 1859. The area of the estuary downstream of the bridges and west of *Plymouth has long been an anchorage and dockyard for the navy.
